SOLD OUT Love Worth Fighting For

Tonight, my handsome man and I are headed out to a SOLD OUT Love Worth Fighting For event, hosted by KSBJ, and I am excited!

The event features speaker, and my 90′s sitcom crush, Kirk Cameron, and singer Warren Barfield, who will encourage and pour out their love to hundreds of “fighting” couples.

I cannot wait to share with you what we learn as a couple and as individuals. You can never grow TOO strong as either, right?

P.S. We will be sitting next to my BF and her hubby, so that makes this night even more special. Two couples, fighting for what is right and enjoying the presence and healing from God himself. Cool, huh?

S and Me 2007

P.S.S. If you wouldn’t mind, we would appreciate your prayers for open hearts and open minds. We are both at odds with a struggle or two within our family dynamics and would enjoy the peace and mercy of answered prayers! <3

Trying to be the good balance of a stepmom/parental unit in our household, but this past weekend the boundaries were crossed and I had to be, what might seem to some, the “bad guy”. I am not Lady Tremaine. It is heavy on my heart that I needed to make the lines clear to my Sweet C.

An amazing summer with our Sweet C ended with the last three days being so difficult all because of a silly pair of jeans. We were so many steps ahead, and because “we” couldn’t communicate, we are so many steps behind. I am not lady Tremaine.

It was perfect timing that I was able to read I Corinthians 13 in my quiet time this weekend, God’s timing is impeccable. I love this girl so much, but God loves her so much more.

We need your prayers. A lot of them. Prayers for my baby to learn from this and grow. Prayers for me to know that I am a work in progress and God is perfect and He is taking care of our hurting hearts.

I would love to hear from you too, if you are hurting today, I would love to pray with you!

Oh. My. Gosh.

Have you ever been sick of spending money? [Stupid, right?] I am there now. I don’t want to go to the grocery store. I don’t want to finish Sweet C’s room. I don’t want to have our master [finally] painted. I’m just over it.

My root cause mind wants to know how I got here. Here is a little jot of what I think may have happened…

  1. New coupons are rolling out and they are low value, like $.75/2 or $1.00/3. Don’t get me wrong, these coupons are great if you can stand to have three boxes of the same cereal and eat them all before they expire… or you have a family of 3+ who actually can take care of the stock quickly. We can’t, wasted money.
  2. We just purchased 40 pounds of delicious 93/7 ground beef from Zaycon… beef isn’t free, you know?
  3. Refinancing a home to a lower interest rate takes a lot of mullah up front, so our savings looks pretty weak right now. [PS, if you are at 6% or higher, now is the time to think about re-financing, especially since the PMI rate was currently reduced] That’s frugal news, you’re welcome. We used Cornerstone Mortgage, they are awesome, email me for their contact info!
  4. My Sweet C’s room is still a disaster. We have made progress – there is a bed, desk and mirror – but there is still so much to do and I prefer for her to come home to a calm area and not a construction zone. She is my delicate flower. One thing at a time, I know, but I want it done now. I’m so silly, I told her I would make her this ruffle throw, I haven’t even purchased the sheets to make it and she will be home on Aug 1. GUH!
  5. Christmas is just around the corner and I have already started shopping, there are TONS of great deals right now on items that I know will be utilized for gift giving. Today, I received an email for $20 off $75 to Vera Bradley, all the rage with the teens and tweens right now. There was a fantastic deal on Groupon over the weekend that I hit up for my brother and B, I’d tell you, but then they would know… what’s the fun of Christmas if you know your gifts?
  6. I have the slight sense that my beautiful, amazing, most wonderful car in the world might be kicking the bucket soon. It hurts my heart. Maybe from all the above, this is the one that gets to me the most. I bought her as a wee baby, just barely old enough to cruise the open roads. We have had a lot of ups and downs and, knock on wood, not one accident; I can’t stand the thought of losing her. It. Is. A. Car. But I paid for her, by myself [my awesome Dad co-signed], I fed her gas, I took her shopping… and to the shop. ::tear::
  7. Finally, my babe. My husband is the bomb. He works so hard for our family. He has provided the income to be able to take fun trips and enjoy the little “luxuries” like dates to Chocolate Bar, volleyball camps, massages, and much more. I feel like I [and Sweet C] have indulged in many luxuries while my husband has been working his tail off; he would argue that this is exactly WHY he works, for us to enjoy ourselves. I love that guy and I tell him I appreciate him every chance I get, but rewards are nice too. Love Languages.

So, you ask, how do I work on these items? Stop Spending. Pray thanks for our abundance. And then sell/donate something… or a lot of somethings.

I am on Facebook, did you know? My personal page is linked to about 7 different Beg, Buy, Barter and Sell groups in my general area. Have you heard of them? No? Well, imagine Craigslist, but extremely local, and people are more willing to meet up instead of making you come to their house [sometimes creepy]. Right now I am trying to sell this awesome Desk and Delta Shower Set; I have them posted on Craigslist and BBBS and have had quite a few hits but not the right buyer yet. Wah! These will help finish up my Sweet C’s room, so I am hoping they are sold quick.. August 1 is fast approaching. Oh, I also have a pair of roller hockey skates for sale, awesome right?

This past weekend I went out with my mom and sister [bro's gf] and purchased a few new t-shirts to upcycle into scarfs/necklaces and let me tell you, I found the most scrumptious XXXL blue t-shirt, check out SweetgumWay soon for new postings!

Also, I have a few designs on Zazzle that are worth taking a look! I love them all, but I guess any mother would love her own creations, especially my Eat. Pray. Run. repeat gear! :)

You can see, I am in a pickle. Don’t be surprised when you see a lot of homemade posts popping up within the next week or two. Remember the sweet string art I made for My Sweet C? Well, she changed her room color to pink and black, so you’ll for sure be sing another string art, because she LOVED IT… but in pink, maybe. GUH!

What about you? Have you been in this type of “I’m sick of spending money” situation before? What has helped you out and what did you sell/make to get a little extra cash in the bank?

Angels Are God’s Helpers

Have you ever had a wonderful thought while putting your baby’s down only to misplace it in the chaos of life?

How about a thought so profound you replayed it over and over in your head and even on paper, wondering what could possibly come of it one day?

That is what happened with my friend, Shelly Morrow Whitenburg. One sunny day in the late 90′s as she was putting her young son down for a nap a rhyme popped in to her head that she could not deny as divine. She said it stuck with her, in her mind and through her words, for many years before she finally wrote it down. Within the last year she reached out to a publisher, on a whim, to see where the Lord was taking this rhyme He gave her many years before. Wouldn’t you know it, she received a call back from Tate Publishing the very next day!

Angels Are God’s Helpers is a sweet rhyme about asking for help from the Angels who are always around us to help, comfort, and protect us.

Angel's Are God's Helpers

“Have you ever been sad or mad? Did you know that Angels Are God’s Helpers and are sent to comfort and protect you when you’re upset? What else can angels do? Find out in Angels Are God’s Helpers—a sweet rhyme about the wonderful support we have in angels. Know that they are here to help you and all you have to do is ask.”

One lucky reader will get their very own signed copy of Angels Are God’s Helpers!

To enter, leave your first name and last initial and the state you are from in the comment section of this post. Entries must be received by Saturday, May 12th.

Easter 2012Happy Easter from the H Family!

We had a wonderful 3 day weekend… B + C had the three day weekend, I had to work, but I am not complaining because they slept almost all day anyways.

On Friday we celebrated with the [non]resurrection of the Houston Astros home opener. Our fam was there, take a look at these pretty girls!

Astros Opener 2012

On Saturday, C and I helped Grandma pick out a new couch. Exciting, right? I think my mom is still in shock from the quote at Gallery Furniture… $3500 for a couch and love seat don’t fly with this frugal family! We went to Ashley and found a VERY comparable set for less than half… and FOR REAL the throw pillows were the EXACT match. GF is just plain crazy on some of their prices.

C and I volunteered at our church’s Saturday Easter 4pm service, watching the babies and we had so much fun. It was so beautiful watching C hold Parker and Ryan, Ryan especially, and enjoy bouncing them around and engaging them in infant activities… she is just the most amazing [step]daughter ever. After our shift was over we took a walk around the church building, looking at the students ministry building and sand volleyball court, and discussed future volunteering opportunities with the infants. She has a heart for caring, my sweet baby girl. When your [almost] teen child shows interest in something… anything, do you fully engage like I do?

On Sunday we slept in then enjoyed lunch at my parent’s house, it was a delightful, easy weekend indeed.

Praise the Lord, He is risen!

Easter Egg Mail

Guess who’s getting an egg for Easter? Almost every Christian child [young and old], of course. But how many are getting their egg… wait for it… in the mail!? My C girl, that’s who!

While out and about, I picked up a larger sized plastic egg [it happened to be pre-filled with sour candies, yay],  some chocolates, and a small gift tag card and then I arranged the egg with cellophane grass. Total cost with shipping, about $8, which most likely would have been a lot cheaper had we went with less expensive chocolate choices.

Easter Egg Mail

Easter Egg Mail

In order to hide the contents for mailing, I covered the inside of the clear plastic egg top with fancy blue and white polka dot duck tape, it fixes everything, right? I also used the decorative duck tape to hide the egg seam, you definitely would not want your egg to hatch prematurely.

Easter Scripture

I chose a special Easter scripture to write in the card to be mailed in the egg:

Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? John 11:25-26

Voila, the finished product, the stickers are pretty well stuck, so I am very confident that we will see this baby again soon!

Easter Egg

How excited would your kids be to get a treat of this size in the MAIL?! If you plan on sending these to your own home this year, I suggest putting them in the mail by Wednesday, April 4. There is no mail run on Friday, so you should have the eggs back home by Saturday.

Do you have a special treat for your kids on Easter?

UPDATE: There will be a mail run on Friday [I usually assume No Coupon Inster weekends as no mail weekends, you know what they say about assumptions], so you still have time to mail your eggs out Thursday, maybe Friday if your post office is within a short range of your home.

This weekend while B and I were enjoying a nice little game of football on the television the most amazing commercial, since Tim and Pam Tebow, aired. It is hitting the stream as the Focus on the Family – John 3:16 commercial… and I loved every second of it’s 32 second run! I stopped fixing dinner once I heard the sweetest voice recite one of the best verses my mother ever made us learn as children:

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son to whomever shall believe in him will not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Everlasting life sounds pretty good to me! I love Jesus and love my life following Him as my Lord and Savior.

With the sucess of the commercial, there are many people hitting the Focus on the Family site wanting to find out more. More on the commercial, more on the organization, more on the loving relationship everybody has been graced with since conception… even before conception!

There are a few freebies on the Focus website right now, check them out:

One Pitch to Humility The fascinating story of a professional athlete’s (Frank Pastore) quest for true fulfillment in life

“All Things to All People” An episode from our most popular kids’ radio show, Adventures in Odyssey

“Grace Abounding” A chapter from one of our audio drama programs, “Amazing Grace”

I am so proud that Focus on the Family made such a bold move, again. I would love to pray for you today!

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend and enjoy the day the Lord has made!

Resolution for Women

I haven’t quite got around to making my New Year’s resolutions quite yet… nothing I really feel like changing other than getting a maid to wash my sheets and clean my floors. Hah!

I have a few goals in mind for the year, maybe writing them to you will encourage the follow through:

  • Learn Project Management and jump into a new chapter at my big girl job. Don’t get me wrong, I love my yob [that IS a Y] and the people I work with, but after four years things get a little… eh? Not that I am bored at all, work is quite busy and new technology is always on the move.
  • Save enough $$$ before December to not have to use one ounce of credit for our Ski trip. My sweet girl boasted just last night about how she purchased 4 shirts from one of her favorite stores for less than $50, because two shirts at regular price would have been more than $50. Frugal chick in the making, I love it.
  • Raise funds for my 39.3 mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer before the event gets here, only four months and $1,080 to go! I would love for you to support me and my team, Band of Bosoms, by donating here. We are also looking for gold [$500] and silver [$250] level sponsors.

Have you ever been in a spot where you had no idea what was going on, like nothing is moving, nothing is happening, you are just living. It is so empty. This is where I have been the past couple of months, wondering what is God’s plan for me in this season? This Christmas, I asked for the book The Resolution for Women by Priscilla Shrier, it was written in partnership with the movie Courageous. It’s time for me to dive deep within and find out about the wonderfully feminine woman, wife, mother, daughter and friend that God has called me to be.

So far I have resolved to be quick to listen and slow to speak, which is not easy for me AT ALL because most of the time I hear but do not listen. It is one of my current character flaws [and I'm working on it], sometimes I go through the day not paying attention to what is important just to get to the next place, next agenda item, next anything that I am not currently involved – it’s a security blanket, a mute choice that I have kept up since I was young.

How about you? Have you read the book? What resolution are you looking forward to coming to fruition this year? I would love to hear from you… I would love to pray for you too! We are going on this journey together, friend! Bumps ahead, hope you have a helmet.
