So, I spoke with quite a few fantastic people on my crazy but true 26.2 mile journey through Houston. One in particular stands out as most entertaining, yet questionable.

Background: I just finished the walk, I’m pooped, hungry and maybe a little crazy looking from the wind in my hair and red blood shot eyes from sneezing and just wiping my eyes with the fingers that had out on sunblock about 6 miles back… and ACTION.

Crew: HI! Congrats! What can I help you with? OMG, are you OK!?
Me: Thanks, I am pooped. I need to get my wrist band for the ride back to the hotel and I my eyes just got sun-blocked on accident… so they REALLY just want to cry right now.
Crew: OH! I am SO sorry [rummages around behind the desk] Here you go!
[Hands me my traveler wrist band and a tube of chap-stick]

END SCENE

Maybe she was predicting the future because at this moment I am wishing I knew where I put said chap-stick.

On another note, my sister had a melanoma, so now she bugs us constantly about sunblock and all that jazz. Yea yea, it’s important. So, at the AIM at Melanoma walk I grabbed a few packages of sun detector stickers and used two today. They are pretty sweet, they change from orange to red depending on the sun levels outside. Anyways, apparently you are supposed to stick them to your clothes and not your skin [don't judge, it was 4am when I put the sticker on] or this will happen:

Star Tattoo

Takes me back to the good ol’ days at the tanning salon… except the sticker would not have been on my arm… gosh, we were SO cool back then ;)

Resolution for Women

I haven’t quite got around to making my New Year’s resolutions quite yet… nothing I really feel like changing other than getting a maid to wash my sheets and clean my floors. Hah!

I have a few goals in mind for the year, maybe writing them to you will encourage the follow through:

  • Learn Project Management and jump into a new chapter at my big girl job. Don’t get me wrong, I love my yob [that IS a Y] and the people I work with, but after four years things get a little… eh? Not that I am bored at all, work is quite busy and new technology is always on the move.
  • Save enough $$$ before December to not have to use one ounce of credit for our Ski trip. My sweet girl boasted just last night about how she purchased 4 shirts from one of her favorite stores for less than $50, because two shirts at regular price would have been more than $50. Frugal chick in the making, I love it.
  • Raise funds for my 39.3 mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer before the event gets here, only four months and $1,080 to go! I would love for you to support me and my team, Band of Bosoms, by donating here. We are also looking for gold [$500] and silver [$250] level sponsors.

Have you ever been in a spot where you had no idea what was going on, like nothing is moving, nothing is happening, you are just living. It is so empty. This is where I have been the past couple of months, wondering what is God’s plan for me in this season? This Christmas, I asked for the book The Resolution for Women by Priscilla Shrier, it was written in partnership with the movie Courageous. It’s time for me to dive deep within and find out about the wonderfully feminine woman, wife, mother, daughter and friend that God has called me to be.

So far I have resolved to be quick to listen and slow to speak, which is not easy for me AT ALL because most of the time I hear but do not listen. It is one of my current character flaws [and I'm working on it], sometimes I go through the day not paying attention to what is important just to get to the next place, next agenda item, next anything that I am not currently involved – it’s a security blanket, a mute choice that I have kept up since I was young.

How about you? Have you read the book? What resolution are you looking forward to coming to fruition this year? I would love to hear from you… I would love to pray for you too! We are going on this journey together, friend! Bumps ahead, hope you have a helmet.

Have you noticed lately that I have been posting more about Breast Cancer? Not only am I joining a lovely group of ladies in 2012 for a 39 mile weekend walk benefiting Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, but this weekend I attended a fundraising event for breast cancer called Project Pink [Link, Facebook].

Project Pink

We were greeted at the door of North Cypress Medical Center by men in tuxedos with trays of mimosa’s… perfect for a Saturday lunch, no? There were silent and live auctions to be won, a fantastic lunch and dessert to be had, inspiring stories and educational doctor notes to be heard and an energizing fashion show to view. Amazing, Jos. A Banks submitted suits to be modeled, I wish I had pictures from the men hamming it up for all of the ladies Wooing after them during the show, one gent had on hot pink trouser socks and received dollars for his support, if you know what I mean! Super Amazing, I cannot believe, Clear Channel provided a $32,000 advertising package to be auctioned off at the live event and it went for UNDER $10,000! Besides supporting me in my walk in 2012, I totally recommend you allocating your donation budget on this event in the future!

One of my beautiful friends, Sandy, was the survivor liaison at the fundraiser, doesn’t she look beautiful? She has an amazing testimony, after marrying and transplanting to Geneva, she found out that she was unable to carry a child and sent back to the great USA. Her next blow was a diagnosis, one that a successful, multilingual business woman was not supposed to have. Breast Cancer. Sandy and Me at Project Pink

I learned A LOT from this party, like cancer does not care how old you are, your education, what you career aspirations are, how many kids you have or how soon you have had them and even family history. I am a strong advisor of women’s annual exams with your OB-GYN, if you don’t have one, hook up with a Woman’s network to find your right fit. My friends in the Houston area, hook up with Houston Women’s Care Associates for your annual exam, mammogram and information! Did you know that most insurance companies support breast reconstructive surgery? Isn’t that just amazing? I told B just the other day: ” A world without boobies is like a world without water.” So True!

In Celebrity News: Giuliana Rancic just announced she is in it to win it with breast cancer. I have to admit, I just love her story, she caught the beast early and she is so real and confident of her victory. If you don’t know part of her story, her and her husband have been trying for years to become pregnant through IVF. We [E! viewers] all thought her big announcement was she was finally carrying – it broke my heart to hear her words of beginning a new battle when she was already amidst a completely different one. She is so encouraging and is In It to End It! If you didn’t catch the story on E!, you can check it out here.

I would love for you to support my Avon Walk, the money I raise will be managed and disbursed by the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade to help provide access to care for those that most need it, fund educational programs, and accelerate research into new treatments and potential cures. I will be just one of thousands of people that will walk up to a marathon and a half over a weekend, raising awareness of the cause and educating even more people. I cannot do it without your help.

From September 27 through October 31, all orders placed from my Etsy shop: SweetgumWay will be allocated 100% to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer – Team Band of Bosoms! Did you know you can also score 15% off any purchase with SWEETGUM15! Keep checking back, new items will hit the market soon.

Band of Bosoms - Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Houston

This year, I have committed to participating in my very first Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. I am very excited to walk with my cousin and friends from long ago – we are wives, mothers and daughters on a mission to end breast cancer.

It is a big commitment, one that will require me to spend the next several months training and fundraising, as if training for my upcoming marathons isn’t enough. Breast cancer is a big disease, one that affects far too many women and men, and I am determined to do everything I can to help put an end to it.

The money I raise will be managed and disbursed by the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade, a 501(c)(3) public charity, to help provide access to care for those that most need it, fund educational programs, and accelerate research into new treatments and potential cures. I will be just one of thousands of people that will walk up to a marathon and a half over a weekend, raising awareness of the cause and educating even more people.

I cannot do it without your help. Though I am required to raise at least $1,800 in donations, I plan to raise at least $2,500! I hope that I can count on your support.

You can make a donation to my fundraising campaign right here on the website by clicking “Donate Now“. If you prefer to write a check, simply contact me and I will send you the information and form. All of our sponsors will be mentioned on our Facebook page as well as their Logos on our Sponsor signs we bring to all out events. Any company whose donation exceeds $250 value will also be listed on our team t-shirts that we wear and sell.

As I prepare for this exciting event, I plan to update my Avon Walk page frequently so that all my supporters can follow my progress, so please visit often. While you are there, you might want to spend some time on the site to find out more information on why this event is so important, and the organizations and people that will be helped by the money we all raise.

Thank you in advance.

Follow my team’s success, get notice of our fundraising events throughout the year, or write words of encouragement on our Facebook page: Band of Bosoms.

From September 27 through October 31, all orders placed from SweetgumWay will be allocated 100% to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer – Team Band of Bosoms! Did you know you can also score 15% off any purchase with SWEETGUM15! Keep checking back, new items will hit the market soon.

Also, for the Month of October, we will be holding weekly raffles for some awesome prizes. Every person who makes a $20 donation to any of our team members accounts, will receive one raffle ticket. For a $50 donation, you get 3! Raffles will be announced on Sunday of each week at the Band of Bosoms Facebook page. Most of these will be for local (Houston) venues.
