A sniper got me this morning.

There I was, minding my business at 5:30am, jogging along to Toby Mac and Group 1 Crew. Then the sidewalk jumped up, out of nowhere, and tackled me to the ground. I got a nice big scrape on my left knee that just keeps oozing and my palms are really tender. I had a really tough time finding my water bottle [I tossed it to be able to catch myself] because it was still dark out and I was underneath trees that blocked the street lights. I was at Mile 1 of 5.5.

I ended up completing the 5.5 miles in 1:05, 10 minutes more than I would like. I think I will take it easy on Thursday with a quick 2 miler; I’m not going to take the chance of the sniper getting me again before we head out on Friday for the Rock ‘N Roll Chicago 1/2 Marathon.

For those of you who complain that runners need to keep it on the sidewalks, this is precisely why we try to stay off of them. They are tilted for water run-off and are sometimes very uneven from one pad to the next. Even when you pay $900 in neighborhood fees per year, the sidewalks are never perfect and will catch you when you least expect it.

    Dear Frugal,
    I do not mind runners not using the sidewalks. However, I do support responsible/defensive running, i.e., get the heck outta the way if there’s a car behind you. Just sayin’
    Wear your oozy knee proudly…it is a testament to just how kick butt you are — you are a running rock star!

    I always run against traffic so I am sure to notice when a vehicle is about to cream me. HaH
